A Moscow Court Has Ordered The Arrest Of Zhanna Nemtsova In Absentia

Boris Nemtsov's daughter commented on the Russian authorities' unlawful decision.
The Zamoskvoretsky District Court of Moscow issued an arrest warrant in absentia for Zhanna Nemtsova, the daughter of the slain opposition politician Boris Nemtsov and co-founder of the foundation named after him. This was reported on Friday, July 31, by the press service of Moscow’s courts of general jurisdiction. According to the court’s decision, the term of detention will be two months from the moment Nemtsova is handed over to Russian law enforcement agencies in the event of extradition or deportation, or from the moment of her actual detention in the Russian Federation, reports "Deutsche Welle".
Zhanna Nemtsova has been charged under the article concerning the organization of activities by a foreign or international organization deemed “undesirable” on Russian territory. The report does not specify which organization Nemtsova is accused of having ties to.
Nemtsova: Russian Authorities Are Annoyed by Everyone Who Opposes the War and Supports Ukraine
In a comment to DW, Nemtsova stated that the case concerns a foundation she helped establish. “The current Russian authorities are targeting all organizations and individuals who oppose the war and support Ukraine, as well as those who defend human rights and civil liberties—the very values that Putin is stifling,” she said. “The Nemtsova Foundation supports independent Russian media in exile, educational projects, and the rights of Russians who have left the country because they oppose Russia’s war against Ukraine and the Putin regime.”
Why the Russian authorities made this decision right now, according to Nemtsova, is “a mystery.” “However, I believe that the Russian authorities’ intensified efforts to destroy independent organizations and put pressure on civic leaders may signal a planned escalation,” she noted.
The foundation founded by Zhanna has been designated “undesirable” in Russia
Zhanna Nemtsova is a journalist and civic activist who formerly hosted the television program “Nemtsova. Interview” on Deutsche Welle’s Russian service. She is a co-founder of the nonprofit organization Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom (Boris-Nemtsov-Stiftung für die Freiheit). In April 2024, the Russian Ministry of Justice added the foundation to the list of “undesirable organizations.”
Nemtsova left Russia in 2015, a few months after her father’s murder. “I’m famous now. The Boris Nemtsov Foundation—which I founded in Germany in 2015—is a banned organization. It’s registered in Bonn, where I flew to today,” Nemtsova wrote on her social media page.
