Latvia Will Expand Its Ban On Food Imports From Belarus

The Latvian government has approved amendments to legislation that expand the ban on imports of goods from Belarus and Russia. The restrictions are intended to apply not only to agricultural products and animal feed, but also to food products, according to the Latvian publication Rus.TVnet.

Currently, the ban applies only to imports of agricultural products and animal feed. The amendments will create a legal basis for extending the import ban to food products as well, the publication notes.

The Latvian Ministry of Agriculture wants the regulatory measures to be extended to processed food products. This could include, in particular, candy, caramel, chocolate, cookies, and other baked goods, sauces, ready-to-eat soups, soft drinks, and beer.

The ban is also planned to apply to imports of such products from Belarus and Russia via third countries. However, it will not apply to transit through Latvia or shipments to other European Union countries.
