Russians Are Complaining That Belarusians Aren't Renting Them Housing

The woman from Siberia was surprised by the Belarusians' attitude toward their eastern neighbors.

Threads user lyutaya_anna, who moved to our country from Russia, described the problems her compatriots face.

“In Belarus, people won’t rent apartments to Russians. To me, this is just another piece of nonsense. <�…> We looked at about 20 options. So I asked about it on my channel, and people are writing that yes, this is indeed the case right now,” she writes, sharing screenshots of social media conversations:

“Hello, we want to visit Belarus, but we’re facing a big problem: how to rent a place for a long-term stay. Everyone says that Russian citizens aren’t allowed to rent—maybe you know what to do?”

“They ask where we’re from; I write ‘Russia’—and that’s it: either a refusal or they don’t even read it. Minsk, Grodno.”

Other social media users explained to the Russian woman why this is happening. The website Charter97.org cites some comments:

— Well, they’re doing the right thing. The answer to the question “what to do” is obvious.

— You have to register with the police, and that’s why they don’t want to. In Moscow, too, they don’t want to bother with registration for Belarusians.

— It’s just that Russian citizens in Belarus are considered foreigners, just like people of other nationalities, and that comes with certain complications and risks. There’s significant domestic demand among Russian citizens for rental housing in Minsk, and in most cases, they’ll choose a Belarusian landlord simply because it’s easier and involves fewer risks.

— No one wants to go through the hassle of temporary registration. And without it, you won’t even be hired, and you’ll be asked to leave the country after three months.
