Has the dictator run out of money for subsidies?
Alexander Lukashenko proposed “revising the approach to budgetary support for agriculture” and “allocating subsidies more selectively.” According to him, the state should not pay farmers “for every squeal and squeak of a piglet,” since agriculture is a business. The dictator made this statement on August 13 during a working trip to the Minsk Region.
Lukashenko noted that the state helps farmers purchase fertilizers, fuel, and equipment, and provides various benefits. However, according to him, we need to “seriously consider when it is truly necessary to allocate funds from the budget, and when it is not.”
“We keep subsidizing everything from the budget. We need to seriously reconsider our approach to agriculture so that we don’t pay money for every squeal and squeak of a piglet. This is a business,” Lukashenko stated.
