Archaeologists Have Discovered A Unique Stone Age Amulet Near Beshenkovichi

The find is about 5,000 years old.

An expedition by the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences, led by Maksim Charnyavsky, is wrapping up its study of the Osovets-2 Neolithic and Early Bronze Age site, according to the Telegram channel “Spadchyna”.

The main discovery of recent days was a bone amulet from the North Belarusian culture in the shape of an animal, dating to the middle of the 3rd millennium BCE. The artifact was discovered directly during the excavation of the site.

Other notable finds from this season include a pendant made from a bear phalanx, flint axes, and amber buttons.

Osavets-2 is classified as a peat settlement, which makes it exceptionally valuable to science. After people abandoned this area, the cultural layer ended up underwater and was covered by a layer of peat. Thanks to the anaerobic environment and lack of oxygen, not only pottery and flint tools but also organic objects—items made of bone, antler, and wood, as well as hunting and fishing gear—have been exceptionally well preserved here.
