Turkey Is Cutting Back On Its Purchases Of Russian Oil

Turkey reduced its oil purchases from Russian ports in July and plans to cut them even further in August after attacks by Ukrainian drones disrupted exports from Russia’s Black Sea terminals, according to Reuters.

In July, Ukraine intensified its strikes on Russia’s Black Sea terminal, leading to a week-long halt in exports from the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal and unstable shipments from the port of Novorossiysk. As a result, CPC’s oil shipments in July fell by 20%.

Turkey, one of the main buyers of CPC and Urals crude grades, received only about 900,000 metric tons of oil from Russian ports in July, compared to 1.2 million metric tons in June. Of this amount, just over 300,000 metric tons came from the Black Sea, compared to 600,000 metric tons in June.

In August, Turkey will receive about 200,000 metric tons of oil from Russia’s Black Sea ports. Two expected tankers will carry Kazakhstani KEBCO crude, while no shipments of CPC Blend or Urals to Turkey are scheduled for this month. However, these figures may be updated later.

According to traders, Turkey is diversifying its supplies to offset the effects of the Black Sea crisis and will make rare oil purchases from Brazil and Guyana in August.
