The Largest Fires In History Have Swept Through Croatia's Resorts

Currently, more than 40 people are known to have been injured in the forest fires in Croatia. Ten people are in intensive care.

Croatia’s top resorts have been engulfed in flames due to wildfires. Entire coastal towns have burned down during the tourist season.

According to officials, at least 10 people have been admitted to intensive care.

Rescue workers battled “one of the worst” fires in the country’s history throughout the night.

About 2,000 people were evacuated from neighboring villages as the fire engulfed the surrounding hills on the morning of August 14. Homes were damaged and cars were destroyed.

During a visit to the region, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković noted that the fire was spreading like wildfire.

Hospital officials reported that more than 40 people have been admitted to the Split medical facility, including German and Polish tourists.

Hundreds of tourists were among those evacuated to a shelter in Omiš set up by the Red Cross, the publication reports. Several other shelters were opened in the neighboring coastal cities of Split and Makarska.

Fires Continue to Rage in the Balkans

But once the situation in Omis improved, the firefighting plane was redirected to another fire on the Peljesac Peninsula, where homes were under threat.

Fires were also raging in other parts of the Balkans, as the heat wave is causing a sharp rise in temperatures and worsening drought conditions.

Emergency crews in Montenegro have been battling fires along the coast for several days, and on Thursday, reports of fires came in near the Albanian capital.
