The list has been handed over to the military.
The Austrian Ministry of Defense has stepped up security measures against possible attempts by Russian intelligence to recruit Austrian military personnel or obtain information from them. The ministry has distributed information to military personnel regarding 21 Russian diplomats who are linked to Russian intelligence agencies and are engaged in espionage.
This was reported by the Austrian newspaper Der Standard following an investigative report by “Agentur” regarding the presence of Russian intelligence agents among Russian diplomats in Austria.
A list of Russian spies’ names was sent to all employees of the Austrian Ministry of Defense, as well as to 23,000 reservists.
Military personnel were asked to be on the lookout for possible attempts by members of the Russian diplomatic corps to make contact with them.
If any of the individuals on the list are acquainted with a member of the military or have attempted to contact them directly, recipients of the letter were asked to report this to Austrian counterintelligence.
The head of the Austrian Ministry of Defense Claudia Tanner confirmed concerns regarding possible contacts between Russian intelligence officers and the Austrian military.
She noted that the activities of Russian intelligence agencies are aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country and spreading Russian narratives.
For their part, the Social Democratic Party and the Greens demanded that the Austrian government conduct a thorough investigation into possible contacts between the military and Russian spies.
