Negotiations on the deal have been underway since July.
The owners of Liverpool, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have confirmed the sale of a minority stake in the club to a consortium led by 1892 Holdings, which includes American billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Negotiations on the deal have been underway since July, according to The Athletic. The exact size of the stake sold has not been disclosed; however, according to sources close to the process, it amounts to approximately 30–33% of the club’s shares.
Bezos invested in Liverpool through the K5 Sports fund. The key partner in the deal is former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia, who heads and manages the 1892 Holdings consortium. The group of investors also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife Elaine.
Bhatia will become vice president of Liverpool and join the club’s board of directors. Joining him on the board will be Elaine Saverin and Brian Baum from K5 Sports. Bezos himself will not take a seat on the board of directors.
This is the American billionaire’s first investment in a sports club. He had previously been linked to potential investments in a number of North American sports franchises.
FSG will retain a controlling stake in Liverpool, as well as full operational control of the club. The deal is not expected to result in any changes to the team’s leadership or day-to-day management.
