The Office of U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a temporary suspension of appointments for visa interviews worldwide as part of the White House’s ongoing push to tighten immigration policy.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson said Tuesday that the department has launched a global training program for staff at all U.S. embassies and consulates, and that the schedule for visa services will be adjusted accordingly.

The State Department did not disclose details of the program or its timeline, stating only that it is designed to help consular officers identify applicants who are likely to subsequently rely on public social assistance in the United States, as well as to ensure a comprehensive and consistent assessment of all visa applicants.

The Financial Times previously reported on the suspension of visa interview appointments, adding that applicants for immigrant visas who had already been scheduled for interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates ‌had received rescheduling notices, ‌and that they would be notified of a new date at a later time.
