Belarusian Artist Vladislav Stalmakhov Has Died

The outstanding Belarusian artist Vladislav Stalmakhov, who had been living near Warsaw in recent years, has passed away. This was reported by his loved ones on social media.

Stalmakhov was born in 1970. His path to art was atypical for a professional artist: he graduated from the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute, and while studying there, he worked as a graphic designer while also receiving artistic training.

Stalmakhov’s work is often classified as primitivism, although this label reflects only part of his artistic approach. The artist consciously employed the language of naïve art—deliberately distorting realistic proportions and perspective, giving his characters a resemblance to the heroes of fairy tales and urban folklore.

Stalmakhov was also among those affected by political repression in Belarus: On November 8, 2020, during protests in Minsk, he was detained along with his daughter, designer Nastya Stalmakhova, and sentenced to 10 days of administrative arrest. After that, the artist decided to leave the country.
