Reuters: Hackers Have Attacked Dozens Of Major U.S. Financial Companies

Ransomware hackers who use phone calls to breach systems have attacked dozens of leading U.S. financial companies over the past month. This was reported by Reuters, citing Google and information obtained by the agency itself.

According to the agency, the hackers created fake websites designed to steal passwords from employees of financial companies and private investment funds.

In a blog post published Thursday addressing the cyberattacks, Google did not name the companies that were targeted but listed the names of the websites created by the hackers: Redact, Pink, Helix, Falcon, and others. A total of 72 such websites were created.

According to Reuters’ own investigation, the victims of the attacks included Blackstone, Bridgewater, Apollo Global Management, KKR, Bain Capital, CME, and Moody’s.

Google, which declined to comment on the agency’s findings, noted that in some cases, companies—which it did not name—paid ransoms to the hackers. The agency was unable to determine exactly which companies did so.

Experts interviewed by Reuters note that hackers’ use of such low-tech methods as phone calls demonstrates that the oldest criminal tactics remain among the most effective.

“Security systems have become modern and high-tech, so the only option left is to trick the security guard himself into opening the gate,” the agency quotes Lee Clark, an expert in combating cyber threats, as saying.“It is precisely the human factor that has caused the problem to reach such proportions.”

The companies mentioned by Reuters either declined to comment or had not yet responded.
