Iran Has Set Forth New Conditions For Opening The Strait Of Hormuz

Iran has stated that an agreement with Oman on control of the Strait of Hormuz is nearing completion. However, officials in Tehran added that the deal alone would not be enough to open the strait, as the United States would have to meet a number of conditions.

This was reported by Reuters and The New York Times.

On Saturday, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Mohammad Baget Zolgadr stated that the U.S. must lift its naval blockade and withdraw its troops from Iran, pay war reparations, unfreeze Iranian assets, and cease attacks on Iran’s allies in the region as well as threats against Tehran.

The NYT reports that Zolgadr’s list of demands defied expectations that the deal with Oman would soon allow trade through the Strait of Hormuz to resume and lower global energy prices.

This is likely to put pressure on U.S. President Donald Trump, forcing him to consider Iran’s terms if he wants to lower consumer prices for Americans—a key issue for Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections.

In addition, IRGC Spokesperson Hossein Mohoggi had previously stated that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz “does not depend on Iranian-Omani negotiations.”
