Revolut Bank Leaked Customer Data To Fraudsters

After receiving a fraudulent request from government agencies.
The British bank Revolut disclosed confidential information about its customers to fraudsters after receiving a fake request from a government agency and mistaking it for a genuine one, according to Reuters a company spokesperson. According to the spokesperson, the email came from an address that did indeed belong to a government agency. The request passed an initial authenticity check, after which Revolut transmitted the data; however, the bank later contacted officials and discovered that they had not sent anything.
The agency’s source added that the company immediately blocked the email address and notified law enforcement, data protection regulators, and financial authorities. Revolut assured that the bank’s systems and customer funds were not compromised.
According to TechCrunch, the attackers obtained dates of birth, mailing and email addresses, phone numbers, as well as copies of identity documents, including passports and driver’s licenses. The Block and Decrypt also reported the disclosure of data on banking and cryptocurrency transactions, including IBANs and withdrawal histories.
The bank did not specify how many customers were affected by the breach or which specific department the scammers targeted. Blockchain researcher ZachXBT, who was the first to draw attention to the emails sent to the victims, stated that the attackers targeted wealthy users.
Revolut serves more than 80 million customers worldwide. The company is preparing for a potential IPO with a valuation of up to $200 billion. In September, Revolut also received conditional approval from the U.S. regulator, the OCC, to establish a national bank in the United States.
Revolut is a British fintech company founded in 2015 by immigrants from Russia and Ukraine—Nikolai Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko. The company operates without physical bank branches. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Storonsky renounced his Russian citizenship.
