Trump Plans To Eliminate The Tariff On Irish Whiskey

U.S. President Donald Trump said he plans to eliminate the 10 percent tariff on Irish whiskey.

This was reported by the Associated Press.

During the awards ceremony at the Irish Open, Trump said that “everyone” had asked him to do this, including Irish Prime Minister Míchel Martin and even some golfers.

“Everyone kept pestering me to do this. And I said, ‘On behalf of the United States of America, I will lift the tariffs on Irish whiskey,’” the U.S. president said.

Currently, Irish whiskey is subject to the standard tariff imposed by Trump on most goods imported from the European Union. In July, this tariff was reduced from 15% to 10%.

In April, Trump announced that he was waiving certain tariffs on whiskey from the United Kingdom, specifically Scotch and spirits produced in Northern Ireland, which created an imbalance in relations with Ireland.

On September 12, during a visit to Dublin, Donald Trump stated that he “would be happy” to see a united Ireland and that, ultimately, its unification with British-administered Northern Ireland would happen.

“Well, I don’t want to cause any trouble, but I’ll tell you this: I’d be happy to see unification. In my opinion, it will happen eventually… I think it would be wonderful,” Trump told reporters after meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

The U.S. president added that the United Kingdom “will have a say in this matter,” but he himself believes that the unification of Ireland and Northern Ireland would be “a wonderful thing.”
