A Russian Frigate In The Baltic Sea Carried Out A Risky Provocation Against Denmark And NATO

On Monday, September 14, in the Baltic Sea, a Russian military frigate fired two signal flares toward an AS-550 Fennec multi-purpose helicopter belonging to the Danish Air Force, which is a member of NATO.

This was reported by reported by the Danish Armed Forces (Forsvaret). According to Forsvaret, the incident occurred near the Danish town of Gedser, located at the southern tip of the island of Falster.

Russian sailors aboard the frigate fired two signal flares toward a Danish AS-550 military helicopter. One of them flew very close to the helicopter.

Fortunately, this incident did not lead to anything serious, although the Russian naval vessel took actions that created a dangerous situation for Danish military personnel while they were carrying out a routine mission in international airspace.

According to The Intelligent, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Barbin to provide an official explanation regarding the actions of the Russian sailors.

For his part, Danish Defense Minister Jeppe Brøus called the incident very serious. According to him, “Russia has lowered the threshold for acceptable risk.”
