The Most Powerful Person In The Field Of AI Is Confident That The Future Is Bright

Jensen Huang views AI safety primarily as an engineering problem.

While executives at leading artificial intelligence companies are warning of risks to humanity, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang takes a much more relaxed view of these concerns. Moreover, he considers talk of the AI threat to be exaggerated, writes The Atlantic.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently stated that self-learning systems could soon spiral out of control and take over the internet. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also supported additional safety measures. At both companies, some researchers have left, fearing the consequences of technological advancements.

Huang, on the other hand, has repeatedly mocked so-called “doomers”—those who advocate for the bleakest AI scenarios.

“What better way to create demand than to invent a problem?” he said at a Goldman Sachs conference, referring to warnings from his industry peers.

Huang’s influence cannot be overstated. Nvidia manufactures the key chips needed by OpenAI, Anthropic, and other companies to train powerful models. Moreover, Nvidia holds stakes in both companies.

Back in 2023, Huang did not sign an open letter from hundreds of tech industry executives who compared the risk of human extinction due to AI to pandemics and nuclear war.

“All it does is process data. There are far more important things to worry about,” Huang said.

The Nvidia CEO views AI safety primarily as an engineering problem, not a political one. He has also advocated for easing restrictions on the export of U.S. chips to China.

Huang acknowledges that one day an AI might emerge that is too powerful to control. “Someday we’ll have an AI god,” he said in January. In the author’s view, the Nvidia CEO himself is doing a lot to make that day come sooner.
