The World's First Solar-powered "ambulance" Has Been Introduced In The Netherlands

Dutch developers have created the world's first solar-powered mobile medical laboratory, capable of operating in the most remote regions without access to power grids or fuel. Stella Juva has already successfully passed testing.
A self-sufficient hospital on wheels
Dutch students from the Solar Team Eindhoven (Eindhoven University of Technology) have developed and certified the world’s first solar-powered ambulance—Stella Juva—for use on public roads. The electric vehicle is powered by fully integrated solar panels and a 50 kWh battery.
The concept behind this vehicle differs from that of a traditional ambulance: it does not transport patients to the hospital, but rather delivers qualified medical care directly to people in remote areas. The vehicle’s main feature is its ability to generate more energy while parked than all of its medical equipment consumes, according to Euronews.
A Successful Test on Kenyan Off-Road Terrain
During the first field tests, conducted in collaboration with the international organization Amref Health Africa, the solar-powered mobile laboratory traveled more than 800 km on the challenging roads of Kenya’s Narok County. On the way to a remote field station in Mosiro, the vehicle endured six hours of extreme off-road conditions.
“During this off-road trip, the steering link connecting the front wheels to the steering mechanism broke. Fortunately, this part was specifically designed to be the first to fail. In just half an hour, the team managed to replace it with a new part, and Stella Juva was able to complete its expedition,” says Solar Team Eindhoven representative Jarno Basten.
Despite the incident, the vehicle demonstrated the high reliability of its design and its maintainability in the field.
Full range of on-site diagnostics
Stella Juva is equipped with critical medical equipment: an X-ray machine, an ultrasound system, an automated external defibrillator (AED), and special refrigeration units for storing vaccines.
The retractable side solar panels not only provide shade for patient consultations but also ensure energy independence. Over two days of testing, the vehicle demonstrated its ability to provide comprehensive diagnostics and care to approximately 200 people.
“It’s really important for the team to see Stella Juva’s potential in practice. It’s not just about eco-friendly transportation, but also about the ability to provide fully autonomous care. Especially in remote areas, where energy shortages are common, this can make a decisive difference,” notes team manager Mateys van Gerven.
The potential to save thousands of lives
In regions with challenging terrain and no stable power grid, such technology can drastically reduce mortality rates. For example, during a single visit, medical staff on the Stella Juva can perform ultrasound examinations on 40 pregnant women—which is critically important for Africa.
“In Narok County, long distances and power outages continue to hinder access to quality healthcare. Stella Juva makes it possible to deliver not only medical personnel but also power and the equipment needed to examine people on-site to remote communities. If we could roll out Stella Juva in these areas, the impact would be enormous: we could identify risks earlier and, ultimately, save lives,” says Jeffrey Sader, project manager for maternal and child health at Amref Health Africa.
