The Curiosity Rover Has Discovered Strange Marks On Mars

The Curiosity rover discovered a strange indentation on the surface of Gale Crater that resembles a footprint or paw print. Could this really be a trace left by a living creature? Could an alien have left it?
In fact, although this object doesn’t resemble anything scientists have seen before on the surface of Mars, it has nothing to do with aliens. And yet the mystery remains, writes Space.
Since 2012, the Curiosity rover has been exploring Mars in Gale Crater. There, in particular, it is searching for signs of extraterrestrial microbial life on the Red Planet in the distant past. Currently, the NASA rover is studying the slopes of Mount Aeolus, which is located in the center of Gale Crater and is approximately 5 kilometers high.
During recent observations, the rover photographed an unusual landform that bears no resemblance to anything scientists have seen before. This mysterious feature consists of a cluster of wide but not very deep depressions scattered across Mars’ bedrock. Bedrock is a dense and solid layer of rock lying beneath the loose surface soil.
Small depressions are common on the surface of Mars and have already been studied by Curiosity. But they are all very different from the recently discovered landforms. The new depressions are much wider but not as deep as those the rover previously observed in Gale Crater. At the same time, scientists have not found any objects near these depressions that might have been present in them originally.
The researchers collected as much data as possible on these strange landforms using Curiosity’s instruments and have begun analyzing it. According to NASA scientists, layers were discovered in the material filling the strange pits, and their chemical composition differs from that of the underlying bedrock.
Scientists want to determine how these pits formed on Mars, how long they have existed, and what they can reveal about the history of the Red Planet.
