A Norilsk Resident Was Surprised By A “funny” Aspect Of The Belarusian Mindset

"This is really cool, but it feels so different after living in Russia."
A former resident of Norilsk 4ekpoint, who moved to Belarus, shared what surprised him about our compatriots.
“Belarusians, you’re so thoughtful!” he writes. “I’ve been living in Belarus for a year now; I’ve settled in a bit and realized that you’re always on the lookout.
My neighbors know which floor button to press for me in the elevator. At the bus stop, they’ll tell me not to throw away a big plastic bottle from the water (I used to throw it out early in the morning when no one was around). My coworkers are always keeping an eye on how I handle my work. They’ll call back and ask how I did on a task (even if the person in question is off that day). They’ll bring over a bag of apples from their garden if you praised the one you tried.
That’s really cool, but so unusual after living in Russia. Can you tell me what’s behind this interesting trait in the local mindset?”
Belarusians answered the Russian man’s question. The website Charter97.org shares some comments:
- Belarusians don’t strive to change the world; they do the little things that make their neighbor’s heart smile.
- In Belarus: there have been many wars on our territory every century, many trade routes, many religions, many nationalities. How do you understand someone with a different culture, faith, language, and traditions? By observing and interacting. And how do you strike up a conversation with a stranger? You’re not going to ask personal questions, but talking about food—that’s fine, I guess; after all, everyone eats. A peaceful world is better than a great war. People are watching you to get to know and understand you better. And I notice the same thing about myself.
- Actually, we’re hobbits—just don’t tell anyone.
- I have no idea why that is, but it’s true. There’s just more kindness in the mindset. Not just compared to Russia—I’m comparing it to many countries.
