Putin No Longer Knows Where The Russian Federation's Army Is Located In The Sumy Sector

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated at a press conference following the SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan that the Russian occupation forces were allegedly 12 km away from the Ukrainian city of Sumy. Prior to that, he had claimed that Russian occupying forces were 10 km away from that town, according to Dialog.UA after monitoring social media.

Putin claims that the Russian Federation’s occupying army continues to establish a so-called “security zone” along the Russian-Ukrainian border in the border regions of Sumy Oblast. According to him, Russian occupiers have 12 kilometers left to go before reaching the Sumy city ring road.

The Russian dictator made the statement about “12 kilometers to Sumy” on September 1, 2026, in Bishkek following the SCO summit. Prior to that, on June 29, 2026, he claimed that the Russian Federation’s army, which was “advancing rapidly,” was allegedly “somewhere around 10.5 km” away from Sumy.

At the same time, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian army was only able to capture a few border towns in the Sumy sector. Some of the settlements allegedly captured by Russian occupiers remain under the full control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Based on a map from the Ukrainian analytical project DeepState, the enemy is currently located approximately 17 km from the administrative border of the city of Sumy.
