The Polish Airline LOT Explained Why Its Plane Flew Into Belarus

“During Flight LO772 from Vilnius to Warsaw on September 1, a severe thunderstorm front was forming along the flight path—from Sejny, near the Polish-Lithuanian border, all the way to Ostrów Mazowiecka. To ensure flight safety, the aircraft’s captain, in consultation with the air traffic control center in Vilnius, requested a course correction and received permission to do so. “The aircraft then came under the control of the Polish regional air traffic control center,” LOT Airlines replied to journalists’ inquiries.

They added that LOT does not operate flights through Belarusian airspace, and on September 1, the aircraft was there for only a few dozen seconds as a result of a course correction due to weather conditions.

“This was an isolated incident dictated by safety considerations and carried out in coordination with the air traffic control center,” the airline explained.

Earlier, it was reported that flight LO772 Vilnius–Warsaw crossed the Belarusian border on September 1, flying over the Grodno Region near the border village of Kalety.
