The German authorities’ decision followed an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone carrying explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian military transport aircraft on the evening of August 4. Investigators later found another drone and about 50 grams of explosives. Following an investigation, Germany officially accused Russia of orchestrating the sabotage.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful stated that Berlin will continue to support Ukraine and will take measures to make it more difficult for Russia to carry out similar operations in Germany and Europe. In response to the incident, Germany will also close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn effective September 18—diplomatic mission staff and their families have been ordered to leave the country immediately.
