The alcoholic beverages on the table included Soviet champagne, beer, and cognac.
Belarusian tennis player Arina Sobolenko showed what a family feast was thrown for her at her grandmother’s house when she and her fiancé, Brazilian businessman of Greek descent Georgios Frangoulis, visited Minsk this summer. The video was posted on the athlete’s YouTube channel.
Sobolenko shared that she had a very close relationship with her maternal grandmother; she lived with her from age 14 to 18 and calls her her second mom. She also shared a memory of how, on her way back from practice, she would always pick cherries from the tree near her house and eat them—and she reenacted the same scene on camera.
When introducing her fiancé to her grandmother, she recounted that as a child, her grandmother would set out an entire “buffet” for her breakfast—anything she could wish for.
In honor of the guests’ arrival, Sobolenko’s relatives also went all out: on the table were dishes traditional for Belarusian feasts—French-style meat, mashed potatoes, salads, mackerel, sandwiches with red caviar and red fish, bread, and pickles.
When the groom asked what kind of meat was on the table, Sobolenko explained that it was beef or pork with cheese, and “it’s very tasty.”
As for alcohol—Soviet champagne, beer, and cognac. The tennis player’s mother, Yulia, explained to the groom that her grandmother loves cognac, and that drinking during such gatherings is a tradition—“everyone drinks, and then they do it like this” (clink glasses).
