Kaya Kallas Proposed New Sanctions Against Russia

This was the EU foreign policy chief's reaction to the "elections" to the Russian State Duma.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, will propose imposing sanctions against individuals who facilitated the holding of elections to the Russian State Duma in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

“The so-called State Duma elections were yet another serious blow to Russian democracy. Their outcome was never in doubt,” Kallas wrote on social media platform X.

“The Kremlin suppressed dissent, barred the only registered party that opposed its war in Ukraine from participating in the elections, and prevented international observers from attending. Only a facade of democratic procedures remains in Russia. I have proposed measures against those who facilitate these sham elections in the occupied Ukrainian territories,” she concluded.

“United Russia” secured a constitutional majority in the lower house of the Russian parliament. According to the Central Election Commission, the ruling party can expect to hold 355 seats in the State Duma—the largest faction in the history of “United Russia.”
