During excavations at a cemetery in the Romanian city of Slatina, a grave containing the bodies of people who died during the COVID-19 pandemic was discovered, the city’s mayor Mario de Mezzo announced at a press conference, according to news.ro.

According to him, during excavations at the cemetery, a grave containing hundreds of human bones was discovered, which were handed over to the Investigative Committee for investigation. Dozens of bags containing undecomposed bodies, left over from the COVID-19 pandemic, were also found there. The date of burial is indicated on them

“This gives the crime a new meaning, since there was a special burial procedure in place during that period,” de Mezzo stated.

According to the mayor, the human remains dumped in the mass grave were exhumed from graves that the cemetery administration subsequently sold.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020, the Romanian government approved a special protocol for handling the bodies of those who died from the disease. In addition to being buried in two airtight bags and disinfected, the bodies could not be embalmed or transported home for memorial services.
