Reuters: Lithuania To Step Up Security At Key Substation Near The Russian Border

The facility will be located 30 kilometers from the Kaliningrad Region.

Lithuania plans to strengthen security at the new "Gizai" electrical substation, which will serve as a key link in the Baltic states’ energy network connecting them to Poland and the rest of the EU, according to Reuters.

The head of the Lithuanian power grid operator “Litgrid,” Andrius Semeskevičius, stated that the facility will be equipped with fencing capable of withstanding a truck bomb, systems for detecting underground tunnels, and reinforced concrete structures to protect transformers from drone attacks.

“We are designing ‘Gizay’ with the new reality in mind. We will protect the substation from ‘Shahed’-type drones, which can make a crash landing carrying 100 kilograms of explosives,” said Semeskievicius.

The substation will cover about 35 hectares. According to the head of “Litgrid,” this will mitigate the consequences of a potential strike on the facility, since even a single drone would damage only part of the equipment.

“Gizai” is planned to be built approximately 30 km west of Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast. It will be the first new facility of this scale in the region since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Lithuanian military is advising “Litgrid” on protecting critical energy infrastructure and countering modern threats.
