A Strong Earthquake Struck Ukraine

Seismologists detected a very shallow epicenter.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 occurred in the Poltava region of Ukraine. As reports the country’s Main Center for Special Monitoring on its website, the earthquake was recorded today, September 22.

“The Main Center for Special Monitoring recorded an earthquake in the Machukhivska community of the Poltava District, Poltava Oblast, with a magnitude of 4.2 (on the Richter scale) at a depth of 3 km,” the statement said.

The Center’s website notes that a strongly moderate earthquake is felt by most people both indoors and outdoors. Many people inside buildings become frightened and run out into the street. Some lose their balance. Pets also run out of the house.

In rare cases, dishes and other glassware may break, and books may fall. Heavy furniture may shift, and the ringing of bells may be heard. In addition, there may be minor to moderate damage to certain types of structures.

In rare cases, cracks up to 1 centimeter wide may form in soft soil, and in mountainous areas, isolated landslides may occur.
