The Kremlin refuses to admit defeat for fear of retaliation.

The Russian leadership has lost the war but refuses to acknowledge it out of fear of inevitable accountability—both legal and to its own people, who might seek revenge.

This was stated by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda during his address to the UN General Assembly, according to RBC-Ukraine citing the broadcast of his speech.

“Formally, it’s not yet being called a defeat, but, in essence, Russia has already lost this war. However, its leadership is reluctant to admit defeat, fearing international legal accountability and possible retaliation from its own people,” Nausėda said.

He also added that as the inevitable outcome draws nearer, the stakes are rising, and the Kremlin regime is increasingly being backed into a corner.
