Journalist and military expert Ivan Yakovina expressed the view that a decisive battle is currently being fought for Dobropillya—and it is very important who wins it.
Ivan Yakovina shed light on what is currently happening on the front lines: “If the Russians lose the battle for Dobropillya now, then Putin will have no choice but to resort to mobilization. He will be 100% forced to carry it out. Right now, it seems to me, the outcome of the entire war is being decided there. If Ukrainian units hold their ground there now, Russia will run out of steam, and going forward in 2027, things will be easier for the Ukrainian Armed Forces than they were in 2026. If, however, the Ukrainian Armed Forces fail to hold their defenses there, they will likely have to retreat, and the Ukrainian side could face major problems.”

“Of course, I don’t know—and can’t know—how events will unfold. I’m no prophet, but I find some comfort in the fact that units of the Ukrainian National Guard’s First Corps, ‘Azov,’ are currently fighting on this most challenging section of the front. They are commanded by General Denis Prokopenko. This is a highly combat-ready unit led by a very talented general. If anyone is capable of withstanding the Russians’ most powerful offensive in this sector—which is personally the most important to Putin—it is the ‘Azov’ fighters,” the political analyst said.
“I don’t know how this battle will end, but I’m more optimistic than pessimistic in this situation, since the troops there are well-trained and the command is competent. Furthermore, those fighting on the Dobropillya front will be aided by successes on other fronts—that is, now that the Russians have been defeated near Lyman, and the Russian command is being forced to send troops, drones, and supplies there—resources that had been set aside to advance the breakthrough the Russians had planned in Dobropillya. In any case, it’s important to understand that the battle in Dobropillya will be extremely difficult and brutal, since for Putin, the fate of his entire war is now being decided there,” Yakovina noted.
