The CIA has warned Poland about potential hybrid threats from Russia, as well as the likelihood of a provocation involving the banking system, according to the Polish weekly Newsweek.

According to the publication, the threat may involve undersea telecommunications infrastructure, on which the functioning of international financial systems depends.

“The Russians have mapped out very well all the cables that are also used by the international banking system and run between Europe and America,” the article states.

Cables running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea between Scandinavia and Poland, as well as between the United Kingdom and Europe, may also be at risk.

The U.S. has recommended that Poland prepare its banking system for such threats—$10 trillion in interbank transactions pass through these cables “every day.”
