The U.S. president's statement came amid reports of the Chinese leader's poor health.

U.S. President Donald Trump, following his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, posted on the social media platform Truth Social, focusing on the appearance of the latter as well as that of China’s first lady.

“Yesterday I met President Xi by the plane (at the airport!), and he looks strong, energetic, and fit—better than ever. And Mrs. Xi, of course, is beautiful!” Trump noted.

Trump’s statement came amid reports of the Chinese leader’s poor health. During the BRICS summit, which took place on September 12–13 in New Delhi, Xi Jinping did not attend the leaders’ gala dinner, which was attended by Vladimir Putin. The WSJ reported that rumors subsequently surfaced on social media about the Chinese leader’s serious illness and fainting spell, but India’s Ministry of External Affairs dismissed these reports as fake news, while the Press Trust of India reported, citing sources, that he had simply returned to his hotel room to rest. At the same time, WSJ sources insisted that Xi Jinping was feeling unwell that evening.
