Xi Jinping Has Revived "Panda Diplomacy"

China will send two pandas to the United States.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, announced that two pandas will arrive at the Atlanta Zoo in the coming days. He emphasized that pandas are ambassadors of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.

“Today I want to share some good news: in a few days, two pandas—Ping Ping and Fu Shuang—will arrive at their new home at the Atlanta Zoo and meet American visitors,” Xi Jinping said during a visit to the White House.

The U.S. first received two pandas in 1972 following a visit to China by President Richard Nixon. In April, the China Wildlife Conservation Association announced that it would send two giant pandas to the Atlanta Zoo.
