A Ukrainian Citizen Attacked A Monastery In Poland With A Knife

A 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen attacked four men and one woman with a knife on the grounds of the Yaroslav Abbey on Benediktinska Street in the Polish city of Yaroslav (Podkarpackie Voivodeship).
This was reported by Polsat News, citing a spokesperson for the District Police Headquarters in Jarosław Anna Długosz.
As a result of the attack, which took place on Thursday around 9:30 a.m. local time, four men—three of whom were priests—and one woman were injured. Police later reported that one priest had died.
The 31-year-old assailant is in police custody. Investigators are determining the circumstances of the incident.
The mayor of Jarosław , Marcin Nazarewicz, told Interia that “the crisis management team has now informed schools, institutions, and parishes that such an incident took place.” These institutions have been urged to “pay closer attention to those entering the buildings.”
The Polish prosecutor’s office provided details about a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of carrying out an attack on the grounds of the Benedictine nuns’ monastery in Jarosław.
According to the investigation, the suspect entered Poland from Germany on the same day.
“We know that this crime was committed by a 31-year-old man, a Ukrainian citizen, who entered Poland today from Germany. He was heading toward the border crossing in Korczowa but did not cross the border,” the prosecutor said.
According to the information currently available, the man entered the convent grounds and then went into the kitchen area. It was there that he likely encountered the first people who were subsequently attacked.
The weapon used in the attack was a knife, which, according to investigators, the 31-year-old man took from the kitchen located on the monastery grounds.
The man was detained at the scene by officers from the Yaroslavl District Police Department. Preliminary investigative procedures involving him are ongoing.
Doctors must determine whether it will be possible to proceed with further legal proceedings.
“A blood sample was taken from him, which will be tested for the presence of narcotics. We have no information about the motives behind this man’s actions,” said a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
A total of five people were injured in the attack: four men and one woman. As confirmed by the prosecutor’s office, the victims included three clergymen and two laypeople.
“We already have confirmation that one person has died. Two are at the Medical Center in Yaroslavl; they are in serious condition,” said the prosecutor.
