Putin's invitation to the G20 summit legitimizes Russia's attack on Ukraine.

On Thursday, September 24, a group of 14 senators from both parties called on U.S. President Donald Trump to rescind the invitation extended to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami in December.

This was reported by The Washington Post.

Lawmakers from the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees emphasized that the invitation would legitimize Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

“Putin bears sole responsibility for Russia’s unleashing of a full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine. Allowing him to participate in the G20 summit in the U.S. raises serious concerns about legitimizing and normalizing the actions of a government that continues to shell civilian targets in Ukraine on a daily basis,” the senators wrote in the letter.

They noted that Putin, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and other members of the Russian delegation are subject to U.S. sanctions for participating in actions deemed a threat to national security.

The lawmakers explain that the Russian dictator may have little incentive to agree to a ceasefire unless he is isolated from the international community.

The Washington Post added that the letter to Trump was initiated by Senators Roger Wicker (Republican) and Jean Shaheen (Democrat), and that six other Republicans and senators also signed the letter.

Recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. had invited Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, scheduled for May 14–15 in Miami.

Following this, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow welcomes the invitation, adding that the matter will be addressed through diplomatic channels.
