An Argentine citizen has been taken captive in Ukraine. Ibrahim Roberto Yamil, a 37-year-old father of two, was recruited by Russia through a Facebook ad for a “high-paying job.” The details of his story were shared by the project “I Want to Live”.

In April 2026, Yamil was scrolling through his Facebook feed and responded to an ad, after which he was added to a WhatsApp group for mercenaries from Latin America. He didn’t have a passport, but the recruiter quickly arranged the paperwork, a visa, and tickets. On April 11, the Argentine flew to Moscow via Rome and Istanbul, and then, along with the Colombians, headed to a training ground in the Voronezh region.

In May, he was sent to the Liman sector as a private in the 272nd Motorized Rifle Regiment. The Russian army uses foreign mercenaries as “cannon fodder.” On July 6, Yamil was wounded and spent three weeks in the hospital. The soldier, who had not fully recovered, was transferred to the “disabled platoon” of the 347th Motorized Rifle Regiment, and in mid-August, he surrendered.

According to “I Want to Live,” the Argentine was paid $10,000 to sign the contract. He is currently in a prisoner-of-war camp along with mercenaries from 55 countries and is hoping for an exchange, but, according to him, Russia “couldn’t care less about foreigners.”
