Scientists Explain The Power Of The Human Face

Eye contact and facial expressions help reduce tension and foster better mutual understanding.

The face plays an important role in human communication, helping us assess the emotions, attention, and reactions of the person we are talking to. Psychologists and philosophers view the face not merely as part of one’s appearance, but as one of the key elements of human interaction, writes Psychology Today.

People constantly interpret facial expressions along with voice, gestures, and posture, and a significant portion of this assessment occurs automatically. Based on the other person’s expression, we try to understand whether it’s safe to be around them, whether they’re listening to us, whether they’re angry, or whether they’re open to interaction.

A subtle change in facial expression can alter the feel of a conversation even before a person realizes why.

Facial expressions are also important for the process of joint emotional regulation. A calm gaze, facial expression, and tone of voice can help another person reduce tension. This is especially important for people who have experienced trauma and have become more sensitive to signals of potential danger.

“Our feelings are written all over our faces,” scientists confirm.

An open expression alone does not guarantee trust or safety. However, it provides conversation partners with an additional stream of information that helps them attune to one another, empathize, and notice changes in each other’s state.

“I’m here. I see you”—this is how the authors describe the main message that a human face can convey.
