Italy Made An Important Statement Regarding Frozen Russian Assets

We need to take action against Moscow well in advance.

Italy has no objection to using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. The country’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, told the news agency Ansa.

“In principle, we are not opposed to this, but we need to determine whether there is a legal basis for it… The problem has always been that adopting such measures could lead to legal complications. We’ve discussed this many times, both within the European Union and on other international platforms, and no decision has been made precisely for this reason—not for political reasons, but for legal ones,” he said.

Tajani also warned that Russia might try to influence next year’s general election in Italy, as well as elections in other countries, such as France, Poland, and Spain.

“I am convinced that this could happen, so we need to act proactively,” the minister said.

He added that Italy is already monitoring cyber threats and other possible forms of Russian interference.
