Erdogan Made An Unexpected Statement After His Meeting With Putin

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is reportedly dissatisfied with the course of the war in Ukraine and therefore “hopes it will end as soon as possible” through peace negotiations. At least, that is the view of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who met with the Kremlin leader in Kyrgyzstan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
Erdogan spoke about this after returning from Bishkek. The Turkish leader added that, in the context of peace talks, his country is “ready to make every effort” for the sake of peace, according to trthaber.com.
Peace Will Prevail, Not War
According to Erdogan, during his meeting with Putin, the two sides “discussed the development of relations between Russia and Ukraine,” and this discussion “was very productive,” while the conversation as a whole “took place in a very cordial atmosphere.” It was precisely during these discussions that the Russian dictator allegedly expressed hope for peace with Ukraine.
“Both we and Putin hope that the war between Russia and Ukraine will end peacefully as soon as possible. We want the peace process between Russia and Ukraine to begin as soon as possible, and for peace to prevail in the region. It is clear that this war has not brought any positive results—neither for our region, nor for the entire world, nor for the parties involved. Is Putin satisfied with the war? No. He expects it to end as soon as possible—peacefully. It is a fact that peace, not war, will prevail. We are ready to make every effort to achieve this goal,” said Erdogan.
The Issue of Shipping
Erdogan also reported that the issue of security in the Black Sea was discussed during his meeting with Putin.
“It is not only Turkish-flagged vessels that are important to us—the safety of all civilian maritime traffic in the Black Sea is important. The conflict between the warring parties must not escalate to the point where it threatens the safety of the civilian population and commercial activities. Accordingly, we need to resolve this issue, because the damage it causes is only increasing,” Erdogan said.
He noted that the so-called “Grain Agreement” reached in 2022 is no longer working, and “there is a need for a mechanism that will permanently ensure the safety of commercial maritime transport” in the Black Sea.
“I want to make it clear that the grain crisis is once again making itself felt on the continent. It would be beneficial to take the initiative in this area as well, before the problem escalates even further,” Erdogan said.
Does Putin Want Peace?
Erdogan’s remarks about the situation in the Black Sea escalating further contradict his claims that Putin allegedly hopes for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine. In any case, the Turkish leader once again offered Ankara’s mediation in new negotiations to establish a new “security mechanism for commercial maritime transport.”
