India And China Step In To End The War In Ukraine

Key events will show just how quickly this can happen.
It is still too early to speak of China and India’s full-fledged involvement in negotiations to end the war, but the fact that both countries announced, almost simultaneously, the need to end the Russian-Ukrainian war indicates that the Ukrainian issue is becoming a top priority—at least for the foreign policies of these two nations, each with a population of over a billion.
The reason for this is that the war against Ukraine has become a pivotal event in global politics since the end of the Cold War, and therefore affects all economic processes and security issues worldwide, without exception. In this regard, both India and China are compelled, at the very least, to comment on the war, which—albeit in different ways—directly affects their economies as well.
Another reason is the growing political ambitions of China and India, which seek to pursue their own courses in global politics, distinct from that of the West. For them, the ongoing war in Ukraine has become proof of the West’s—and especially the U.S.’s—inability to ensure global stability.
At the same time, China and India have their own levers of influence over Russia—namely, the purchase of Russian oil. And in China’s case, this also includes dual-use goods, without which Russia would be unable to wage war. However, in order to deploy these tools, Xi wants Trump to genuinely ask him to do so, in exchange for recognizing China as a world power on par with the U.S.
But this is precisely why Trump has not done so yet. He still believes in his own exceptional diplomatic abilities, while statements from India and China remind the world that these abilities are not exceptional at all. However, if events continue to unfold according to the same scenario, Beijing and New Delhi will negotiate with the West regarding their broader involvement in ending the Russian-Ukrainian war. And that will be good news.
Key events that will indicate how quickly this might happen are the congressional elections and Xi’s visit to the U.S., which is scheduled for September.
