Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, who paid for Donald Trump Jr.’s post-wedding party in the Bahamas, is trying to use his connections with the American elite to strengthen his position in the world of boxing, reports The Telegraph.

According to the publication, the event cost at least $170,000. Trump Jr. and his wife offered to return the money, but The Telegraph believes the party may be just part of a broader campaign by Kremlev.

Kremlev took the helm of the Russian Boxing Federation in 2017 and became head of AIBA—later renamed IBA—in 2020. Under his leadership, the organization increased prize money and reinstated the Russian and Belarusian flags at competitions. As a result, the International Olympic Committee withdrew its recognition of the IBA.

“Kremlev is seeking to restore the IBA’s control over Olympic boxing,” writes The Telegraph, linking this goal to the organization’s activities in the U.S.

The publication also highlights the businessman’s ties to Russian authorities and his involvement in the gambling industry. Kremlev has publicly demonstrated his support for Putin, and his projects have gained access to major Russian assets.

Meanwhile, the IBA is actively recruiting well-known athletes and organizing large-scale boxing events. According to the authors of the investigation, reaching out to an American audience and establishing contacts with Trump’s inner circle may be part of a strategy to strengthen the organization’s influence.

However, the scandal surrounding the payment for the party has already forced the Trump family to distance itself from the affair and could complicate Kremlev’s plans.
