Romania Was Unable To Form A Government

Prime Ministerial candidate Siegfried Mureșan failed to secure the necessary majority of votes in Parliament.

Romania has once again failed to form a cabinet following the government’s resignation in May. Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Mureșan failed to secure the necessary majority of votes in the Romanian parliament on Wednesday, September 30, according to DW.

Only 182 votes were cast in its favor, with 15 votes against.

Meanwhile, at least 233 votes were required—out of 465 lawmakers in both chambers.

Now, Romanian President Nicușor Dan has the right to call early parliamentary elections. However, he may also propose other candidates.

Earlier, on May 5, Romania’s pro-European government, led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, was forced to resign. The cabinet, which had been in power for only ten months, was defeated by a vote of no confidence in parliament.

Observers noted that this was not just another government crisis, which occur regularly in the country. The last time a prime minister served a full term was from 2004 to 2008. Since 2012, there have been 11 elected heads of government, as well as 7 who served in the position on an interim basis.

The Social Democrats continue to block any attempts by Dan to form a government.

Amid a severe economic crisis and political fragmentation, early elections could lead to a strengthening of the far right, observers note.
