A Belarusian Woman Was Hit With A Hefty Tax Bill For Her “luxury” Car

Even with a 50 percent discount for a family with many children, the total came to a staggering amount.

A BMW X7 owner from Belarus received a notice to pay vehicle tax and shared the amount in Threads. She was charged 1,265 rubles for her 2020 model.

“Vehicle tax. 1,265 rubles per year. And that’s with a 50% discount. It’s a 2020 model,” the woman wrote, showing the electronic receipt.

She later clarified that she received the 50 percent discount as the mother of a large family.

The amount sparked a strong reaction from users. The car owner herself explained that she used to pay about 140 rubles, so the new charge came as a surprise to her.

“It used to be 140, but now it’s 1,265. I think you’d be shocked too if you saw how much they’ve raised it,” she replied to one of the commenters.

Some users decided that the woman was more likely showing off her expensive BMW than complaining about the tax.

“Are you bragging about your BMW or complaining about taxes? Make up your mind—should we be happy for you or feel sorry for you?” wrote one of them.

Others were also surprised by the amount of the bill and even doubted that such a sum could have accrued in a single year.

“What kind of nonsense is this? Maybe it’s for a couple of years?”

“That’s nonsense. There are no tax rates like that, and the tax is calculated based on the car’s weight, not its age.”

There were also those who considered the high tax a fair price to pay for an expensive car.

“Buy a ‘Jili’ and stop whining about the tax.”

“That’s normal—you have to pay the government for your status.”

“Well, you paid the luxury tax, and that was just for half a year.”

There were other owners of expensive cars who received large bills as well. One user posted a receipt for 1,847 rubles for an Audi RS Q8.

“Mine came today too. RS Q8,” he wrote.

Another driver reported that he was charged 1,220 rubles for the eight months he’d owned the car.

A 50% exemption from the vehicle tax in Belarus is provided, in particular, for parents in large families.

The BMW X7 is included in the list of luxury vehicles; however, the higher vehicle tax rate applies only if certain conditions established by law are met, including those related to the vehicle’s age.
