In the 1980s, Mercedes-Benz released a car that looked like an ordinary compact sedan but was actually designed with the racetrack in mind. We’re talking about the 190E 2.5-16 Evo II—one of the rarest and most famous versions of the 190 model, according to Autoblog.

Mercedes produced a total of 502 Evo II models. The car was developed for homologation of the racing version, which competed in the German DTM touring car championship, where it had to go head-to-head with the legendary BMW M3.

But the Evo II stood out even among its siblings. Its racing history, rarity, and distinctive design turned the car into a true classic.

Today, well-preserved examples are worth hundreds of thousands of euros. One of them was recently appraised at nearly €530,000—clear proof of just how highly collectors value this chapter in Mercedes-Benz history.
