The Renowned Belarusian Writer From Belastochchyna, Sakrat Yanovich, Would Have Turned 90

On September 4, one of the most important Belarusian writers from the Białystok region, Sakrat Yanovich, would have turned 90. On the day of his anniversary, a memorial evening was held in Białystok. Attendees shared memories of the writer. There was also a discussion about culture, literature, and the Polish-Belarusian border region. During the event, excerpts from documentary films were shown, reports “Polish Radio”.

Sakrat Yanovich was born in 1936 in Krynki, in the Białystok region. A writer, journalist, and translator, he left behind more than twenty books, dedicated primarily to the life of the Belarusian minority in the Bialystok region, its language, memory, and the search for its own identity.

For many years, Yanovich was associated with the Belarusian weekly “Niva” in Poland and the Belarusian Literary Association “Belaveža.” He was also active in civic and political life.

An important part of Yanovich’s legacy consisted not only of his books, but also of his meetings and conversations about Belarus, its culture, and the borderlands. His family home in Krynki, known as Villa Sokrates, became a gathering place for the Belarusian intelligentsia: writers, artists, and scholars.
