Poland would like to raise the issue of the functioning of democracy in Belarus in the UN Council.
Poland is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2019. From January 1, 2020, this seat will be taken by Estonia. Meanwhile, as Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz noted, Warsaw will preside in the UN Security Council in August. During this period, several meetings at the highest level are planned, dedicated, in particular, to the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, Radio Poland reports.
Jacek Czaputowicz reminded that on the initiative of Poland, the UN General Assembly unanimously designated 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. Reports show that 80 percent of the victims are Christians.
Jacek Czaputowicz noted that Poland will participate in the UN peacekeeping operation in Lebanon. The Foreign Minister also said that the situation in Ukraine had been discussed eight times during the Polish representation in the UN Security Council, whereas there had been only one such meeting before: "We must not forget about this problem. We must be blunt: it was aggression [Russia's aggression against Ukraine]. We support Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its borders, recognized by the international community."
Poland also intends to be a member of the UN Human Rights Council in 2020-2022. Elections to the Council will take place in mid-October. According to the Foreign Minister, Poland would particularly like to raise the issue of democracy in Belarus in the Council.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs touched upon the rule of law in Poland and said that the official Warsaw had won the case related to the application of Article 7 of the EU Treaty on the Rule of Law to it by the European Commission.
