  • 17.01.2023, 14:08

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for January 19.

Boris Pistorius will be Germany's new defence minister and will be appointed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

This was announced by the press service of the federal government.

Pistorius will receive a certificate of appointment from the German president on January 19 and will take the oath of office in the German Bundestag.

Scholz welcomed Pistorius' appointment as head of the German defence ministry. The chancellor described him as an experienced politician with administrative experience who has been involved in security policy for many years.

"With his competence, assertiveness and big-heartedness, he is the right man to lead the Bundeswehr at this crucial time," he said.

It is also noted that following Christine Lambrecht's resignation, Scholz held close consultations with the party leadership and the SPD parliamentary group and decided on Pistorius as the new defence minister.

Pistorius is an associate of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the SPD. He has been interior minister of Lower Saxony since 2013 and has been a member of the state parliament in Hannover since 2017.

Pistorius was also burgomaster of the German city of Osnabrück from 2006 to 2013.

As Charter97.org reported, on January 16, Lambrecht formally asked Scholz to resign and he accepted her resignation on the same day.
