Prosecutor Investigating Mafia Attack On TV Channel In Ecuador Killed

Prosecutor César Suárez, who was heading an investigation into a case of the attack of armed men on a TV channel live on air, has been shot dead in Ecuador.

The prosecutor, who was in charge of cases involving organised transnational crime, was ambushed.

The country's attorney general, Diana Salazar, called on the forces of order to guarantee the safety of those carrying out their duties.

Salazar said her office is conducting a preliminary investigation at the scene of the murder.

The Judicial Council condemned the attack in a statement and said Suarez was killed while travelling to a court hearing.

The police statement said the murder had the characteristics of an assassination attempt and that the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

What's Happening in Ecuador?

On Tuesday, January 9, masked men stormed the set of Ecuador's public television station, waving guns and explosives, during a live broadcast. The country's president, Daniel Noboa, issued a decree declaring that an "internal armed conflict" had broken out in the country.

No one was killed in the attack, but authorities later said all the masked attackers had been arrested - 13 in total. They will face terrorism charges.

Authorities have not said who was behind the takeover of the TV station or the series of other attacks that have shocked the South American country recently, but they followed the escape from prison of two leaders of Ecuador's most powerful drug gangs.
