What's going on?
The Belarusian Ministry of Defense has suspended the construction of a military town in the Homel region near the border with Ukraine.
This was reported by the Belarusian Radio Svaboda.
Journalists analyzed satellite images and found that work at the site of the Chaika facility (a former Soviet pioneer camp), located 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, was probably stopped for unknown reasons.
A source for Radio Svaboda sent the editorial office photographs taken on the territory of this facility, which belongs to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense. They show that there is no active work there. The only thing they have done now is to demolish the buildings of the former pioneer camp. There is no equipment, no workers, no security at the facility.
The publication also received satellite images that confirm the information received from the source. A satellite image from October 10, 2024 shows that no new facilities have appeared on the territory of the former camp.
Plans to build a new military town and training ground in the Homel region became known last year, and they were included in the state investment program. The first stage was supposed to be completed in March 2024. However, for unknown reasons, construction was suspended. As of October 23, no new buildings have appeared on the site of the former camp.
According to official sources, it was planned to allocate 500 thousand rubles from the budget for the construction of a new military town in 2023, 10 and 40 million in 2024 and 2025, respectively. The project was supposed to start in 2023 and be completed in 2027.
