Journalist Oleg Suprunyuk Was Sentenced To Three Years In Prison

Before the trial, he was held in pre-trial detention for more than six months.

57-year-old Brest journalist Oleh Suprunyuk was sentenced to three years in prison for participation in an "extremist formation" (Article 361-1 of the Criminal Code), writes Belarusian Association of Journalists with reference to Suprunyuk's acquaintances.

The trial over the journalist was held on August 8, before the session he was kept in a pre-trial detention center for more than half a year.

The journalist was detained in January 2025, but nothing was known about his case for a long time. In June, the Brest Region Prosecutor's Office published a press release without naming the detainee, but it was clear from it that it was Suprunyuk.

The press release said that he "joined the Belarusian Association of Journalists" (which the Belarusian authorities consider an "extremist formation") no later than October 2023, and as a "participant" wrote at least 43 articles, which were published on the Internet (where exactly - is not specified).
